A vast three-terminal complex covering around 10,000 acres / 4,045 hectares, Kansas City International Airport (MCI) is amongst America's largest and features three runways, which can handle around 140 hourly air movements. The airport is located approximately 32 km / 20 miles northwest of central Kansas City and next to Hampton, Platte Gardens, Tarrytown and the Tiffany Greens Golf Club.

Kansas City Airport prides itself on an extremely low level of flight delays, due in no small part to its relatively uncongested air space, fine weather and state-of-the-art landing equipment. Passengers may be interested to know that Bonnie and Clyde were involved in a major shootout nearby in the early 1930s.


Metro buses operate at Kansas City Airport, accept either cash or bus passes and run between Monday and Friday. Taxis can be requested by phone, while around 15 different shuttle companies, such as the KCI Shuttle and the Roadrunner Express, connect the airport with downtown Kansas City, which is home to both the historic River Market neighborhood and the 18th and Vine district.

Ground transport also links the appealing suburb of Crossroads Arts, the trendy entertainment hub of Westport, and the Brookside district and its many shops, close to the University of Missouri-Kansas. Further afield, St. Louis is located directly to the east.

Amongst the main sights of interest within the city and easily reached from the airport, the buzzing River Market district stands out and boasts many period buildings and an enticing outdoor farmers' market. Also worth a look are the trendy nightspots within the Westport neighborhood, the huge roller coasters at the World of Fun theme park, and the outstanding paintings at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. For families, a trip to Kansas City Zoo is hard to beat.
